Cross Country

We all had a fabulous time at cross country. It was great to see the kids get out there and give it a go. In particular they are to be commended for the resilience they showed. Many of them have been battling a cold or a bug and they got out there and gave it their best. What a great way to show the school values Te Kakano, ka pai!

Alphabet Audio

Alphabet Audio

You may wish to use this audio to help your child learn the alphabet sounds at
home. It is a good idea to get your child to find letters on the alphabet card
randomly as well.
This way they can use their sound knowledge to write and read new words.
Use the letters in their name as a starting point. Enjoy.

The Fire Service visited today

The Te Kakano team were lucky to have visits from the local fire service today. We have been learning about fire safety.Today we were shown how quickly a fire can spread in a short video clip. Some points we discussed were...  fire lighting equipment must be only be handled by adults, smoke alarms must be in all our homes, and all families should have a family meeting place. A highlight was when the children had to move quickly under a blanket simulating smoke.

This is Room 23 practicing our 'Mindful Breathing'. Most days after lunch we all come inside and either choose a book to read quietly, or lay on a pillow and practise our Mindful Breathing. We have discussed a number of situations where we might use our Mindful Breathing in everyday life, and the children have identified certain emotions where it may come in handy. Such as if we are feeling angry, anxious, frustrated, over excited or stressed out. I have even seen a few of them put it in to action and it works brilliantly.
The benefits of mindfulness are not just anecdotal: A growing body of scientific research shows its positive effects on mental health and well-being. Practicingmindfulness has been shown to improve attention and reduce stress as well as increase one's ability to regulate emotions and feel compassion and empathy.

Welcome back everyone.
We hope you all had a relaxing holiday with family and friends.

Our Visit to Pipi Pizza

During Term 2 each Junior class was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to go down to Pipi and make a Pizza. Thank you to Chris, Alex and Chloe who worked with the children teaching them how to make up the pizza box,  press out a pizza base and then put the toppings on. While the pizzas were cooking each child drew their own Food Truck .
An amazing experience and many thanks to the fantastic support from parents.

Our New Outdoor Kitchens

On Monday 25th June we had the great excitement of unveiling our new outdoor kitchens that we purchased for the children in our outdoor play based learning area. We were able to buy the two kitchens using a generous donation from a parent.

Ice Skating

Te Kakano just loved going ice skating at the beginning of Term 2. They had a can do attitude and they practised balancing. Not only was it fun but it also provided great inspiration for our writing. Take a look at them in action!
